More TV Equals School Trouble Later
"Toddlers who watch too much TV may struggle in school later,
with measurably lower scores in math, and they may get bullied
more than other children, Canadian and U.S. researchers reported
on Monday.
Less surprisingly, children who watched more TV at age 2 weighed
more by the time they were 10 and ate more snacks and soft drinks,
the researchers reported in the Archives of Pediatric and Adolescent
Medicine.
They said children who spend more time watching TV and less time
playing with other kids may lose valuable chances to learn social
skills.
Every additional weekly hour of television at 29 months corresponded
to a 7 percent drop in classroom attention and a 6 percent drop in
math skills, the researchers found.
"Despite clear, age-specific recommendations from the American
Academy of Pediatrics that discourage any screen media exposure
during infancy and less than two hours per day beyond 2 years of
age..." the researchers wrote." - Yahoo Health
Here's some interesting news. What's more interesting is that this
concept probably applies to other "high tech" kiddie gadgets that
were not yet available at the time that this research was made.
So what's the alternative? Good old-fashioned activities: tummy
time, singing songs, reading books and playing with toys are
just some examples.
Yes, you read that right. As parents, we have to relearn the lost
art of using one's creativity to come up with fun -- and educational
-- activities for our kids.

We've reached the 3 months old mark!
eating. By around 3 months old, though, they begin to be influenced
by the combination of this internal wiring and the external world —
the routines you create. Some babies naturally and easily fall into the
rhythms of their household. Other babies have a more irregular
sensibility and are more resistant to the cues you provide.
You can help settle an erratic baby's temperament by building a
daylong schedule of feeding, playtime, bathing, and other activities
that's consistent. Try to work around your baby's natural inclinations.
Finally, let go of ideals of perfection: If you have a baby who resists a
regimented schedule, the best you can hope for is more regularity in
your household — not a complete absence of disorder." - BabyCenter
Stephen Covey was spot on when he said that with people, one needs
to be effective not efficient. As a WAHM with a newborn, my schedule
still follows the baby's. Baby M does have a basic pattern. It's not "on
time" but rather a matter of "phases". He's just a baby --- and he's
just doing what all babies do.
I have learned that: It is I that must adjust. It is I that needs to be
flexible.
As a result, I am less stressed out about getting it all done. And
M and I are simply enjoying our time together.

Baby M
against writing about the pregnancy as I wasn't sure how that
would go. It was challenging and I'm just glad it ended well.
Baby M is now 2 months old and I'm happy to say that we're
slowly establishing a "doable" schedule. At least well enough
for me to squeeze in this post.
The first day home was crazy! There was so much excited
noise when we got home; Baby M cried for us to give him
peace and quiet! On his first night, he gave tatay and mama
a shock! We were expecting to feed him every 3-4 hours.
But no, he decided that he would feed every hour! And this
lasted until he was 1 month and 2 weeks old.
Well into 1 month and 3 weeks, Baby M suddenly switched
to an every 4-5 hours feeding period. Ahhh, H and I finally
have back our much needed sleep!
I'm sure we'll have more exciting things to experience in the
weeks and months ahead!

We lost the baby
We lost the baby...
I was in shock when I first found out. The December 23 ultrasound showed that the baby was fine. Except for the wrong ageing, which we thought was just a fluke -– the baby might be on his side or something -– we were looking forward to having our bundle of joy in 2009!
Christmas and New Year's came and went. And everything was fine...
Then came January 5, my first ultrasound date for 2009. The first thing I asked was for the baby's age to be checked. The first thing I was told was that the baby had no heartbeat... Huh?!? What?!? How could this be?!? After 3 minutes, the doctor confirmed that the baby officially had no hearbeat...
Whaaaaaaaaah! I was not expecting this! No warning that the baby was already gone! And then my next question was, “What do I do now?”
In a nutshell, I opted to wait a week for the baby to “pass out” of my body. Unfortunately, that didn't happen. Sooooo, I had a d&c done. The wait was nerve wracking! Many thanks to everyone for assuring me that this was a normal procedure and that I need not worry! Of course I was scared! With God's help, I was pretty calm on the day of the procedure. And I thank the Lord that the d&c went well! The procedure itself was painless. And, I claim that my recovery is going well!!!

The long and short of bed rest...
A lot of people have asked, what exactly does one do while on bed rest?
To the clueless, bed rest does sound like a legitimate word for slacking
off. But that's one thing it definitely isn't.
Most days, I surf the net, watch t.v., read and pray... On bad days,
I just lie down.I literally have to pace myself for fear that too much
activity will affect the baby. Eat then lie down, pee then lie down,
shower then lie down, you get the picture. And the days just come
and go...
But I can't complain... This baby is a blessing! God's blessing to hubby
and I... You see, I have friends who're attempting to get pregnant...
I have friends who've had miscarriages... I have friends who've
spent a fortune on fertility treatments that have yet to be met
with success... This pregnancy may medically be “over budget”
but that's okay... So long as our baby is happy and healthy!
So, if you have a friend who's glum because they too are on bed rest,
tell her to hang in there! This too shall pass!
Happy 2009 to all!
Special thanks to www.emofaces.com for the smiley!

Where to go when you're stuck in bed.
I have now been on bed rest for a week and a half. Ho hum, ho hum. I would love to go out and see the world. Christmas is my favorite time of the year! It would be great to see the malls all dressed up for the season! But nope, I still have to lie down and rest...
Thank goodness there are a lot of pregnancy and baby internet sites out there. One site that I've found useful is Baby Center. It's like a one stop shop for all my pregnancy questions! And no, I am not connected with this site in any way or form :D
I just love their baby calendar! Each week, I get news on what's supposed to be happening to the baby and I, for that particular week's stage of the pregnancy. This week, I am at week 7. By this time, my baby's hands and feet are forming. I, on the other hand, should feel normal that I am experiencing appetite loss. Oh yes, I'm encouraged to take a photo of my tummy now, it will be getting bigger soon...
Baby Center occasionally sends out bulletins as well. This week's bulletin contained a link to questions on stuff that are considered safe/not safe for pregnant women.... Some of the the questions listed were generic: “Is it safe to wear high heels when I'm pregnant?” Some were quite amusing: “Is it safe to get or have a belly button ring when I'm pregnant?” A few were a bit hilarious: “Is it safe to ride the bumper cars at an amusement park when I'm pregnant?”...
Check out the site and you'll see what I mean hahaha...

Good news!
After many months of waiting, I finally have good news! Hubby and I are now expecting our first baby!
Oh my, my first time time pregnancy is turning into an interesting experience...
I really thought I had my period! But I had this sinking feeling that things were not “normal”. I then decided to give a friend a call... Upon her advice, I got a pregnancy kit test --- I was pregnant! A succeeding trip to the doctor then landed me in a phenomenon called “bed rest”.
Bed rest is just that BED REST. No standing, no sitting, no doing nothing. It's quite challenging as I'm used to moving around. Thankfully, I now live in a day and age where everything is just a phone call or email away. I still work, somewhat, except I do so in the confines of my bedroom.
Apparently, one can only do so much work lying down! I have spent the rest of the time reading books ~~~
You see, Hubby and I do not have a TV nor an internet connection in the flat ~ and that's another story in itself. But we do have a good number of books and cooking magazines in our reading nook. In fact, these books and magazines are now sprawled all over the mattress. Hubby is quite surprised at the mess I have managed to create :D No big deal, it will all get fixed once I'm allowed to leave the bed, hahaha!
I have also tried to increase my prayer time. Lately, I've just been too busy to have an honest to goodness prayer time. Quite common really. And yet one must ask oneself, “If God gave me more time, would I use the extra time in prayer?” Now here I am, at a point in my life where God is giving me more ME time. I know this too is AN INVITATION to make my time more HIS time.
Hmmm, I've been told that this is supposed to be a nice relaxing time for me --- Ahhhhhhh, I can't wait for the doctor to give me an “out of bed pass”! :D
